Just five miles away from Wickersley School is the Advanced Manufacturing Park, home to the University of Sheffield AMRC (Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre), as well as the only Boeing Factory in Europe, McLaren, Rolls Royce and many more specialist engineering firms. Opportunities for young people in the area include Intermediate, Advanced and Degree level apprenticeships with the AMRC recruiting around 230 new apprentices every year.
Wickersley students were privileged to explore the new technology in use in the ‘Factory of the Future’ and ‘Factory 2050’ at the AMRC. They had first-hand experience of how robots and 3D printing are being used to design cost and resource efficient prototypes used to solve challenges such as the more efficient production of drones and medical implants.
Students also tried VR (Virtual Reality) to experience how it is used as a training tool, for example, to take apart and rebuild a jet engine. The fourth revolution of IT is being used to create engineering solutions and robots are a regular sight collecting and delivering tools to the engineers at work!
