Year 9 visit the HeppSY+ Bus
Thursday 27th June 2019

On the 13th June 2019 over one hundred Year 9 students got involved in the HeppSY+ Bus workshop. The Higher Education Progression Partnership South Yorkshire Plus is a national programme aiming to support young people most at risk of missing out on higher education. The HeppSY+ bus workshop is a mobile classroom which travels to schools across the region to offer young people support and advice regarding higher education.

The workshop is split into two 30 minute sessions which is split between the decks of the bus; during both students take part in a number of activities. Both sessions are engaging, fun and give the students the opportunity to test their knowledge of higher education, against well-known myths and traditions they may have heard.

The downstairs session involves discussing all misconceptions students might currently have about higher education and then providing them with the facts. The session is highly discussion based and gets students thinking about their different routes and options. This session provides young people with the important information they need to make an informed decision about their future education.

The upstairs session is a more independent student led activity where they are given a business such as Disney Land and then given the challenge of researching the most bizarre and interesting career within that organisation. This prompts student interest into unusual careers and creates the knowledge of the vast amount of career opportunities available to them. This session provides young people with the vision of picturing themselves in various careers and sparks enthusiasm into their futures.
