DNA Discoveries
Wednesday 3rd February 2016

Recently students visited Sheffield University Laboratories and encountered some DNA discoveries. They first did a taste test to see if they can taste PCT which is a bitter chemical found in brussel sprouts.

They then spent some time extracting and concentrating their own cheek cells using the centrifuge. Then they added a compound that separated their own DNA from their cells and used the polymerase chain reaction to amplify their DNA. Finally they did gel electrophoresis to separate out their chunks of DNA to compare it to standard samples.
