Congratulations to the U16s and U19s Netball teams both through to the Regional Round of the National Schools tournament.
The U16’s faced Sheffield High School, Hill House and Silverdale in the tournament. Wickersley showed great determination and skill in the first game scoring a fantastic 27-4 victory over Silverdale. The second game was against close rivals Sheffield High School. It was a close game in the opening minutes going goal for goal, however through fantastic performances from our defence, interceptions were made and our attack calmly brought the ball down the court for Millie Morritt and Issy English to remain on top form and sink in shot after shot. This lead to a comfortable win of 15-8. The last game saw them compete against Hill House, if they won this match they would win the tournament and proceed to the regional round of the National school tournament. The U16’s showed great strength and fitness to win the game very convincingly, with Alice Winch and Georgia Sulej showing class and calmness in the centre court and Keara Harper showing her versatility in defence making some fantastic interceptions. Special mention to Ebony Hobson and Jess Vaughan, who at Year 9 stepped up 2 school years to take part in the tournament. They showed confidence and skills beyond their years and heavily contributed to the team’s success. Well done girls!!
The U19’s faced Sheffield High School and Birkdale in their tournament. Wickersley faced defending champions Sheffield High School in the first match, who had won this tournament since 2005, so were the favourites to succeed. However, right from the whistle Wickersley looked determined and focused converting goal after goal showing impressive performances from Abbie Reed and Katie Morritt in the shooting circle. The U19’s took everything in their stride and played a calm and calculated game. Mollie Arif showed great calmness in the Centre position feeding fantastic passes into the shooters; whilst Lucy Winch and Holly Fenwick applied great pressure onto the opponent’s shooters forcing errors from Sheffield High School, this lead to Wickersley leading 8-6 at half time. In the second half, it was clear that Sheffield High School hadn’t given up yet, they fought back every second of the match, making our girls dig deep, however as the final whistle blew Wickersley had triumphed and won the game 10-9. This is the first year in history that Wickersley U19s have ever beaten Sheffield High School in this competition! The second and last game saw us face Birkdale whose team were made up of a few ex High School students. However, it was clear that the momentum of winning had taken over and Wickersley played their socks off to beat Birkdale convincingly sending them through to the regional round of the National Schools. This win is a true reflection of the U19’s dedication and commitment in training so well done girls!
