The U16 & U19 Netball Success
Monday 28th November 2016

The U16 & U19 Netball teams through to the Regional Round of National Schools.

The U16’s faced Sheffield High School, Hill House and Aston in the tournament. Wickersley showed great determination and skill in the first game which lead to a fantastic 11-10 victory over Hill House. The second game saw them compete against close rivals Aston. It was a close game in the opening minutes going goal for goal, however through fantastic performances from Derana in our defence, and Robyn Elliott in Centre court, interceptions were made and our attack calmly brought the ball down the court for Jessica Vaughan and Annabelle Parkin to remain on top form and sink in shot after shot. This lead to a comfortable win of 18-4.

The last game saw them compete against Sheffield High School, if they won this match they would win the tournament and proceed to the regional round of the National school tournament. The U16’s showed great strength and fitness however in the last minutes of the game High School scored a last minute winner and the game ended 9-8 in favour to High School. However, due to High School losing to Hill House earlier on in the day, the positioning’s went down to goal average. It was tense waiting for the results but Wickersley were victorious and came out in the top spot meaning they will now progress to the next round as South Yorkshire Champions. This was a particularly fantastic achievement as the girls are Y10 and therefore entered this tournament a year young, so to finish as South Yorkshire Champions is an incredible achievement- well done!

The U19’s faced Sheffield High School and Aston in their tournament. Wickersley faced Aston first who they had only beaten by a few goals in the Rotherham’s finals day a few months prior, so we knew this game was going to be close. After a slow start from our girls, and some fantastic interceptions from Keara Harper in defence we slowly started to take a lead in the game. Isobel English was on top form in the shooting circle, keeping her cool to sink in shots from the edge of the circle. The momentum took our centre court through and the game finished with a fantastic win of 21-7.

The last game they faced were Sheffield High School who looked determined to take back their title which we took from them last year. The game was very tense going goal for goal, however after some intense pressure from our defence we managed to get a turn over resulting in a 2 goal lead at half time. It was clear High School hadn’t given up as they quickly equalled the scoring in the opening minute of the second half. But after some outstanding Netball from Alice Winch in attack and some phenomenal shooting from Milly Morritt and Isobel English in the circle, Wickersley were triumphant as the whistle blew and won by 1 goal. This means we retained our title as South Yorkshire Champions for a second year running.

Congratulations girls, very well deserved!
