Overview of KS3

In Year 7 and 8 Religious Studies students develop both Knowledge and Understanding and Personal Opinion and Debate skills. Students have the opportunity to develop an understanding of the main beliefs and practices of Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Buddhism and Sikhism. They also have an opportunity to study religions by focusing on major themes, such as the media, food, art, life after death, gender, punishment and marriage and family. Students also study non-religious viewpoints such as atheist and humanist responses to philosophical questions.

Throughout all of the topics studied, students are encouraged to provide their personal views on the matters in a safe and respectful environment.

Our aim is to provide students with the ability to articulate their ideas both verbally and in writing, all the while reinforcing the use of specific terminology and the correct use of spelling, punctuation and grammar. Students undertake writing assessments on the topics studied which helps to inform their overall levels and progression.

Overview of KS4

In Year 9 students who have opted to do GCSE Religious Studies start the course by practising GCSE exam skills and technique across the following four topics:

Having developed a good understanding of the GCSE skills students then move onto studying the specific examination content for the new Edexcel (Pearson) GCSE B course. The course involves an in-depth study of Christianity for Paper 1, this has units on Marriage and Family, Beliefs, Practices and Matters of Life and Death. Following on from this, students study Islam for Paper 2; this has units on Beliefs, Crime and punishment, Living the Muslim Life & Peace and Conflict.

In addition to their core and GCSE option subjects students in Year 9 partake in Philosophy, Ethics and Religion (PER) lessons. Students are not formally assessed in these lessons and instead receive just an effort score. The aim of these lessons is to, firstly, develop transferable skills, such as, critical thinking, reasoning, communication; and secondly to nurture values such as tolerance.

Students in Year 10 and 11 are completing the new Edexcel (Pearson) GCSE B course. The course involves an in-depth study of Christianity for Paper 1, to be studied in Year 10. This has units on Marriage and Family, Beliefs, Practices and Matters of Life and Death. Following on from this, In Year 11 students study Islam for Paper 2; this has units on Beliefs, Crime and punishment, Living the Muslim Life & Peace and Conflict.

Both papers require students to demonstrate a thorough Knowledge and Understanding of religion and belief and an ability to debate. Both papers will be sat at the end of Year 11.

 


Grade Ladders

Grade ladders show the skills/content that a pupil is required to demonstrate to reach each particular grade. These can be used by pupils and parents in targeting what they need to do to make progress in each subject.
