Netball Finals Day

Saturday 2nd April marked the return of the Rotherham Schools Netball finals day. After 2 years of COVID preventing this event from taking place, it was a pleasure to be able to host this event at Wickersley School and Sports College once again.

Our Y9s qualified across Rotherham; Maltby, Wickersley, St Bernard’s, Wath, Aston, Oakwood, Wingfield, Rawmarsh, and Wales for the Y7, Y8, Y9, Y10, Y11, and Sixth Form tournaments. It was a fantastic morning of netball, with an exceptionally high standard of play shown across all age groups, Rotherham really does have some very talented young netball players.

The year 7 tournament saw some very close games between the schools involved but the final was between Wath and Rawmarsh. After a nervous start from both teams, the girls dug deep and Wath secured a successful 6-2 win. The Y8 final was played to an exceptionally high standard between Wickersley and Aston, with Wickersley taking the win with a score of 29-14.  The Y9 tournament was another demonstration of talent and class from both teams with Wath beating Maltby 13-1. The Year 10 finals again were extremely close between Wickersley and Wingfield with the score tied going into the last quarter. Wingfield took an early lead in the 4th quarter and eventually went on to win the game 16-14. The year 11 tournament showcased some fantastic Netball from both Wickersley and Oakwood.

In the end, Wickersley demonstrated great strength and took the win 30-8. Finally, the 6th form tournament showed a great deal of experience and skill with some superb attacking and defensive play by all 3 schools involved. Due to only three schools entering the tournament, the sixth form format followed a triangular fixture rather than the normal
semi-final, final setup.

In the first game between Wickersley and Wath, Wickersley took an extremely close win of 14-13. The second game between Wath and Aston saw another close game but Aston eventually pulled away to win 15-8. The third and final game saw Aston meet Wickersley. After some fantastic attacking and defensive play, Wickersley took the lead with a 19-10 win, resulting in taking the gold medal followed by Aston in the runners-up position.

A final thank you to all the schools, teachers, players, and coaches for their hard work and commitment, and a big thanks to all the umpires who supported the day. Without you, it wouldn’t have been such a great success. A fantastic morning at Wickersley with a great performance by all of our teams; your schools will be very proud of you. Well done!
