On Tuesday 3rd March, Liam Taft, Amy Hitchings, Lewis Braithwaite and James Hanson from Year 12, attended the Holocaust Educational Trust’s Lessons From Auschwitz project in Poland.
The visit lasted for just one day and involved a visit to a synagogue in Oświęcim, a tour of Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II (Birkenau), and ended with a memorial service on the site of the former extermination camp. Here the students were able to light remembrance candles and reflect on the things they had seen during the day.
The students attended a seminar in Leeds the week before they travelled to Poland, where they were privileged to hear testimony from Holocaust survivor Zigi Shipper.
The students will also attend a follow-up seminar on Sunday where they will discuss the lessons they have learned with students from all over Yorkshire. They will then bring these lessons into school where they will plan a project to share with Year 9, who are currently studying the Holocaust in their History lessons.
