Wickersley was one of only a handful of schools to be given an Outstanding Practice Award by Rotherham Healthy Schools at their annual celebration event at the New York Stadium on Wednesday 18th June. The award was given for the Dragons Den charity project which took place earlier in the year.
To allow more student input to the choice of charities for which to raise money through our non uniform days we instigated a Dragons Den style forum to choose the charities to support. All students and staff were invited to pitch a charity that they wanted the school to support outlining why they thought it was a worthy cause and why we should support the charity.
We had about 10/11 students/groups of students/staff present to the 10 members of the school council (2 from each year group) and Ms Butler. The presentations were awesome – some moved us to tears, most were personal in some way.
The council discussed them and chose 5 ( they couldn’t get it down to 2 as planned!) and then approached the Head to request an extra day with a view to sharing the proceeds between all 5 chosen charities. We held one day just before Easter, one is planned for July 4th and one will carry over to early September.
The award was recognition of the good practice of giving students control over what they raised money for and developing active citizenship and we raised money for Teenage Cancer Trust, Cystic Fibrosis Trust, Sheffield Childrens Hospital Charity, Rotherham Hospice and Pippa Jones Little Treasure Trust.
