Wickersley Girls Football Are Shrewsbury’s “Most Sporting Team” in Joe Hart’s Tournament

Pupils aged between Y7-9 braved the three hour minibus journey to Shrewsbury on a Girls Football Tour in the last week of April for four days and three nights where they played a whopping eight games across three days and finished off with a 5 a side tournament on the final day – and met Joe Hart in the process!

The girls were the youngest squad in the competition and were commended by HD Sportsworld staff for their attitude and enthusiasm towards all aspects of the tournement where they won “Most Sporting Team”. The pupils were joint runners up in the 11 a side tournament but came third on goal difference to “Hinchingbrooke School” from London, who they drew against in their first game with an impressive display of football. On the last day, pupils were split in half to make “Wickersley A” and “Wickersley B” and play in a 5 a side tournament on astro. Both came top in their group and therefore it was a Wickersley final – with Wickersley B going 1-0 up but losing eventually 2-1 to Wickersley A.

Some sterling performances were had both on and off the pitch – with the three year nine girls, Emma Thackeray, Bryher Taylor and Jade Smedley leading the way in how to do it! The charismatic Year 7 girls (who made up most of the squad) made a very good account of themselves both in playing ability, competitive drive and team work and would be perfect contenders to return to play in next year’s tournament. Some excellent goals were scored by Charlotte Leeks, Tia Stanley and Jade Smedley – who was named an the unofficial “Player of the Tournament” by tournament staff across both the girls and boys section! Player of the Match Awards went to Jade Smedley, Lauren Winter, Bryher Taylor, Miah McInnes, Ella Sanderson, Emma Thackeray, Charlotte Brady and Tia Stanley.
