The role of HeppSY is to work together with students, employers and local Universities to help broaden student’s outlook towards higher education, and help them make more of an informed decision by gaining an insight into the possibilities of University life.

By working in partnership with Sheffield Hallam University, the University of Sheffield & many colleges & schools in South Yorkshire, HEPPSY+ hopes to increase the number of young people progressing into higher education and achieving their highest potential. This is an exciting opportunity for students to get involved with different activities, educational trips, interactive workshops & more.

HEPPSY+ Bus

We have had multiple visits from the HEPPSY+ big orange bus already this year. This bus is staffed by HEPPSY+ graduate interns who have recently graduated from University, and they have first-hand, recent experience of University life. They provide an insight and are able to answer questions, and provide subject specific, interactive activities for our students.

What we’ve experienced already!

Our Year 9 students have also had the opportunity to visit Sheffield Hallam University; they had a tour of the City campus, worked with current University students on a business related project that counted towards their dissertation and received valuable information through workshops about student finance.

Doncaster Royal Infirmary Visit

Our Year 10 students interested in the medical field had the opportunity to visit Doncaster Royal Infirmary. They had the chance to speak to multiple health care professionals and experiment with different equipment used in chosen health care professions.

Our Year 12 Science students were involved in activities during Science Week at Sheffield Hallam University. They worked with recent science graduates building planes, along with other hands-on activities involving Bioscience and Chemistry.

Some Year 10 & Year 9 students were also involved in programmes such as ‘Brilliant Club’ and ‘Spring Up’, which are based at Sheffield Hallam University. Over the course of four days, students had the opportunity to really experience what life would be like at University. They attended lectures, seminars, social events and they were given an assignment to complete by the end of the program, which was graded by either 2:2, 2:1 or 1st. Finally, after all their hard work, they had a graduation day in which they were presented with a certificate of their achievements.

We had another discovery day at The University of Sheffield for our Y9 students where they toured the campus and were involved in a carousel of hands on activities to help them experience what University might be like for them.

Our recent visit to the RAF Centre in Leeming (link) was an opportunity day designed to get students thinking of the possibilities of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Maths) and/or RAF related careers. Students will had the chance to talk with members of the RAF, including engineers and logisticians, visited various sections including the gym, sports facilities and got to sit in one of the hawk jet aircrafts that will be flying pass the Queen at Buckingham Place to celebrate 100 years of the RAF.

Students also had the opportunity to attend a workshop at The Deep in Hull taking part in a workshop ‘Save Our Seas’ as well as looking at science-based careers linked to marine biology and conservation and if course the chance to say ‘hello’ to the wonderful marine life that lives there.

What’s coming up?

Many activities are being planned for the next academic year.

This is an exciting opportunity for our students to really get the most out of their education, so if you have any queries, or if you have any ideas about a particular area or career you or your child would like to experience, please send me an email: rmullins@wickersley.net.
