Year 6 Transition Information

We would like to extend a warm welcome to your child as they move towards becoming a student at Wickersley School and Sports College. We know it is a big step into the wider world and we look forward to working together in the years ahead to ensure that your child achieves success and develops as an individual.

This page will include updates of useful information helping you to get to know Wickersley.

Virtual School Tour

One of the early challenges Y6’s face when making the transition to comprehensive school is finding their way around what is usually a much bigger campus than they are used to. To try and help prepare for this we have created a virtual tour of the school. Please take the time to watch the video to try and help your child familiarise themselves with what is going to be their new school environment.

Transition Information Videos

Each week, we are going to create a video with lots of information for you about life here at Wickersley.

In our first video, you can meet the Year 7 team, learn about form time and get answers to your frequently asked questions!
Check it out below:

Activities and Tasks

Gain an insight into what sort of work you will be doing when you start Y7. Each subject at Wickersley has provided a taster activity for Y6s to have a go at.

This booklet has some information about Wickersley Maths teachers and a few mixed tasks for you – pick some out and have a go!

You could:

  • see how far you can get in the 4 number game
  • try some mixed skills questions
  • read about and research famous mathematicians
  • crack a code by solving some maths problems
  • work out a number from some clues
  • attempt some tricky maths challenges
  • complete the maths “cross-number” puzzle

Or you could have a go at it all!

An introduction to PSHE and a look at dental health.

Practice your hand-eye coordination by having a go at the catching activities on the assignment. Once complete try the Wall Throw Test and record your scores. Follow the instructions carefully. Watch the video if you are unsure of what to do.

Please have a go at this short circuit training session – we would like you to complete and record how many of each exercise you do in the 30 seconds you are working for. You will need to complete each exercise for 30 seconds and rest for 30 seconds afterwards, before starting the next exercise. In the table, it has the name of the exercise, a diagram of what to do and then a column to write down how many you completed.

Welcome to Wickersley! We are sorry we can’t see you in person yet but here are some little challenges and some ways you can practise the language in a fun way!

Use the resources listed here to help improve your Geography knowledge and skills ready for year 7!

An introduction to History at Wickersley!

For this challenge, you need to try and complete each square of the grid before starting school in September.

To complete a square of the grid, you need to read something that matches with what is in that square. Then you fill out the square with the title of the text, the author and the date that you read it.

The texts you read don’t just have to be stories. They can be stories, poems, newspaper articles, online articles, text books, history books, leaflets or any other type of text.

Watch the video to get a taste of what Science at Wickersley is about and then make yourself a Science lab pass with your own set of safety in the lab rules and see how many points you can get in the Kahoot quiz!!

Religious Studies

You can pick and choose to do any of these activities to give you a flavour of what Religious Studies will be like at Wickersley!

ICT & Computing

Follow the information in the presentation to create your own presentation, leaflet or poster with tips of how to stay safe online.

Wickersley Values

As a school ‘Wickersley Values’ promotes the attributes we believe students will need in order to develop independence, responsibility and resilience.

Scientific Calculator

We know how often students come up to Wickersley having bought a ‘scientific calculator’ but not necessarily the most useful one or the one that is strongly recommended for them to use in their GCSEs and hence have to spend further money on another one/the correct one in the future.

Here are three calculators we would recommend.

Casio FX83GT - FX-83GT Scientific Calculator
Casio fx-83GTX Scientific Calculator
Casio Scientific Calculator FX85GTXSUT
  • The first image has now been discontinued, but if you already have this one it is absolutely fine still to use (Casio FX83GT – FX-83GT Scientific Calculator).
  • The second one is the new version, that is readily available to purchase online/in-store right away (Casio fx-83GTX Scientific Calculator).
  • The third one is the same as the second in all honesty, but it has solar power so you don’t have to worry about replacing the batteries in it (Casio Scientific Calculator FX85GTXSUT)

However, although we have sent this information out, please reassure students/parents that if they want to wait until they arrive at Wickersley and have spoken to their Maths teacher to confirm the one they intend to purchase is the right one, this is absolutely fine.
