On European Day of Languages, students at Wickersley School took part in a range of exciting activities designed to celebrate the rich diversity of languages and cultures from across Europe and beyond.
One of the highlights of the day was a baking competition, where students were challenged to create a bake inspired by the event. This could be through design, recipe, or a cultural theme – and the creativity on display did not disappoint! With 30 entries from Years 7, 8 and 9, the competition showcased an incredible range of ideas.
After a lot of tasting and tough judging, the winners were announced:
- 1st Place – Joey (Y7): An outstanding Italian-inspired cake that wowed the judges, earning him the “Showstopper” title
- 2nd Place – Sofia (Y9): A beautifully baked Mediterranean loaf using sundried tomatoes, olives, and cheese, presented in a Bundt tin. This entry earned the “Technical Challenge” award
- 3rd Place – Freddie (Y7): A creative batch of cupcakes decorated to represent iconic American dishes – a fun and unique interpretation of food culture
Alongside the bake-off, students also had the chance to immerse themselves in new languages through special workshops led by visitors from the University of Sheffield. They tried out German, Russian, Portuguese, and Chinese in fun and interactive sessions, playing games and even singing songs to help embed their new vocabulary.
It was brilliant to see so many students engaged, excited, and inspired to learn more about languages and cultures. Events like these are a wonderful way to bring the curriculum to life and celebrate the value of multilingualism across the Trust.
