We’d like to say a huge well done to our very talented musicians who performed at the Rotherham Riverside Recital at Riverside House on Friday!
At Wickersley School and Sports College and Wickersley Partnership Trust, we believe it is important to provide our talented young musicians with a variety of opportunities to perform in front of an audience, both in and out of school.
Performing music is essential for personal growth and provides societal benefits as it promotes confidence, creativity and a sense of community. The Rotherham Riverside Recital was in front of a small audience and our wonderful pianists had the opportunity to play on a world-class Steinway grand piano.
We often visit cities like London, Sheffield and Manchester to explore culture but there is so much undiscovered culture right here in Rotherham – like Wentworth Woodhouse, the Steinway grand piano at the Riverside Cafe, and other beautiful and acoustically rich venues we have.
It is our fantastic students who will be the future of ensuring this cultural capital in Rotherham continues to develop and shine. Musical talent can come from any socio-economic status and community, and we have lots of raw gifted and talented musicians at Wickersley and in our town.
Miss Bingham, Director of Music at Wickersley Partnership Trust, said: “Practising an instrument, attending instrumental lessons and completing examinations brings personal pride to students and is extremely beneficial for developing independence, focus and self discipline. Here at Wickersley Partnership Trust, we recognise the importance of learning to play an instrument and every student has the opportunity to learn an instrument of their choice with a specialist teacher as part of the Music curriculum offer.”
Miss Lockwood, Teacher of Music and Leader of Broadening Musical Horizons, at Wickersley School and Sports College, said: “Practising for a community-based performance, where students can see an immediate benefit of sharing joy and happiness through the medium of music within their community, seems to encourage our students to rehearse more and increase their performance confidence – I’ve seen it time and time again. Students like to have a purpose and when that purpose is spreading joy and cultural capital throughout our community, then it gives students the intrinsic motivation to want to practise and make progress on their instrument.
“These students have been coming to Music most breaks over the last couple of weeks and putting in the extra hours at home to practise for their performance at the Riverside Recital. Within our Trust, we strive to create opportunities for students to perform on their instrument both within our local community and school.”
