During November and December, Y8 had the opportunity to visit the Shri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Gurdwara in Sheffield as part of their entitlement curriculum. This visit is a great example of the Wickersley Partnership Trust Enrichment Promise, providing students with meaningful experiences beyond the classroom that deepen understanding and broaden perspectives.
A core belief of the Religious Education curriculum is that learning is enriched through first-hand experiences. Visiting places of worship plays an important role in helping students develop a deeper understanding of faith, belief, and lived religious practice.
During their visit to the Gurdwara, students explored key aspects of Sikhism, including the significance of the Guru Granth Sahib, as well as the core values of equality and selfless service. Some students also had the opportunity to learn how a turban is tied, before sharing a meal together in the Langar Hall, experiencing the tradition of communal dining that is central to Sikh worship.
In the afternoon, learning continued with an urban fieldwork study led by the Geography department. Students took part in a walk along the Five Weirs Canal Walk into Sheffield city centre, where they investigated the question: “To what extent is Sheffield a sustainable city?” This hands-on experience allowed students to practise key fieldwork skills that will be revisited at GCSE level for those who choose to continue studying Geography.
A fantastic day of learning beyond the classroom – well done, Year 8!
