  • Students meet common topic vocabulary, whilst learning language related skills, with a strong focus on literacy. We cover: sound-spelling links, reading and listening skills, opinions, dictionary skills, common verbs, numbers, dates, alphabet, adjectives, connectives, intensifiers and negatives.

  • Students continue to consolidate skills and knowledge learnt so far and begin to apply rules in different situations. We introduce topic related vocabulary and regular er verbs, whilst continuing to consolidate sound-spelling links, reading and listening skills, opinions, dictionary skills, common verbs, adjectives, connectives, intensifiers and negatives

Year 8

  • Continuing on skills and vocabulary learnt in year 7, students develop the ability to manipulate grammar and understand more complex structures. We cover: aller + à, the simple future tense, revision of regular ER verbs, more common irregular verbs, infinitive phrases, time sequencing, develop opinions, negatives and direct object pronouns. There remains a strong focus on literacy and skills.
  • Food & Drink & Lifestyle
  • The course develops skills further through the very cultural topic of food and drink. Students are taught how to talk about what has happened in the past and there is a particular focus on speaking due to the transactional nature of this topic.

Year 9

  • Media
  • Students develop their skills further by accessing more authentic materials through the study of a variety of different media, including: French cinema, TV, celebrities and music. Consolidation of previous skills is the focus, and consolidating and developing the perfect tense and introducing the imperfect tenses, as well as giving more complex opinions.
  • Holidays
  • The final term in key stage 3 uses the theme of holidays to consolidate prior learning and knowledge of different tenses, grammatical structures and vocabulary. Students also learn how to use the conditional tense to talk about what they would do given specific circumstances

Year 10

  • Grammar
  • There is a high grammatical content in term 1, to remind and consolidate skills learnt in year 9 and developing them to a higher standard. Authentic French poetry and a variety of different sources are used to add interest.
  • Media
  • French film, Amelie, is used as the basis of the next topic, personal identification, with the objective of creating a task for the first written controlled conditions assessment. Skills & consolidation work continues on a lesson- bylesson basis.
  • Travel and tourism,
  • with a spoken and a written controlled conditions assessment being completed. Skills & consolidation work continues on a lesson- bylesson basis

Year 11

  • The topic of school, including the use of new technologies, is covered and using a film about a French boarding school in the 1940s as inspiration, a second piece of speaking controlled conditions coursework is produced. Skills & consolidation work continues on a lesson- bylesson basis.
  • Listening and reading practice
  • With all controlled conditions assessments completed, students undertake intensive revision of all common topic areas listed in the syllabus for the reading and listening exams, learning and consolidating knowledge of vocabulary and skills.
